Part of our mission is to provide tutoring using the Orton Gillingham methodology. Orton-Gillingham is an instructional approach that has proven effective with children and adults who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing especially those with dyslexia and dysgraphia. Tutoring is conducted one-on-one, by a highly qualified tutor. Lessons are designed to meet the individual needs of each student.
The Orton-Gillingham methodology focuses solely upon the learning needs of the individual student. It is diagnostic, prescriptive, multi-sensory and it is taught to mastery. Students with and without dyslexia need to master the same basic knowledge about the English language and its relationship to the writing system. However, because of their dyslexia, students with specific language based learning disorders need more help than others making sense of our language system. Language elements such as phonology, morphology, grammar and syntax that non-dyslexic learners acquire easily must be taught directly and systematically.
The Orton-Gillingham approach is different from other methods of teaching in that it is multi-sensory, systematic and individualized. It is direct instruction of structured literacy. Multi-sensory meaning it engages all of the brain’s learning pathways (sight, sound, touch and motion) simultaneously. Structured meaning it progresses from easier to more challenging concepts in a logical and sequential way; learning builds cumulatively with frequent practice and review. Direct meaning that this method is explicit as reading and spelling rules are explained, goals are set and the learner works toward specific benchmarks within 5 different levels.
